Quin Veturius is the head of Gens Veturia. He is the father of Keris Veturia and the grandfather of Elias Veturius.

Personality[]

General Veturius has a sexist attitude, as he never takes pride in his daughter's accomplishments like he does Elias'. He even names Elias as his heir instead of her, though Elias also observes that even Quin disapproves of his daughter's general cruelty. Quin can be as heartless as his daughter, but he's the only relative Elias has who treats him like family.[1]

Physical Description[]

Quin has thick white hair and gray eyes. He towers over everyone.

Biography[]

Quin Veturius is a retired general in the Martial Empire. Despite his age, he is still intimidating. Elias describes him as "a falcon watching the world from an updraught."[2] Quin took Elias in the moment Elias was chosen to attend Blackcliff Academy because Keris refused to do so. Elias seems to truly love him.

The day Quin met Elias, he taught him a chant: "The field of battle is my temple. The sword point is my priest. The dance of death is my prayer. The killing blow is my release." He claims saying it sharpens the mind.[3] Elias spent every leave training with Quin. He endured beatings and harsh discipline but gained a distinct edge over his classmates. Quin knew that Elias would need all the advantages he could get at Blackcliff because of his uncertain parentage and because he was raised among the Tribes. "If anyone dared to treat Elias poorly because of his background, Quin put them in their place, usually with the point of his sword."

An Ember in the Ashes[]

Quin and the rest of Gens Veturia attend Elias' graduation ceremony at Blackcliff. He is frustrated with Elias' focus on Helene Aquilla. Because he doesn't value women as soldiers, he thinks Elias is wasting his time and that Helene is only good for having babies. After the Trials though, Quin changes his mind and realizes that there is more to Helene than he though.

When Elias is charged with treason and sentenced to execution, Helene helps Quin escape into the desert north of Serra. Before leaving, he warned Helene by saying, "You watch your back, girl. You're strong, and she'll kill you for it. Not outright. Your family is too important for that. But she'll find a way."[4] They both knew he meant the Commandant.

A Torch Against the Night[]

After Elias is declared a traitor and fugitive, Quin goes into hiding in Navium.[1]

A Reaper At The Gates[]

Helene finds Quin's hiding place in the forest surrounding Navium. She gives him Elias' mask. He tells her about Keris' childhood. He explains how his wife died young, leaving Keris alone. When Keris was chosen for Blackcliff, Quin thought she would die in the first week because she was soft. However, she didn't even though her peers made her life hell. Quin tried to train her but she wanted nothing to do with her. Blackcliff warped her. Just after she graduated, she allied with the Nightbringer, who has been the closest thing she has to a friend. The only time Quin saw true emotion from Keris was when Elias was chosen for Blackcliff. She was worried she would lose her commission and told Quin that she only let Elias live because "his father would have wanted it."[5] He tells Helene not to only look at Keris' actions, but to look at her and what she wants and why she wants it. He implores her to look at Keris' history and how it has altered her mind. If the Nightbringer is her master, then Helene must determine what he wants and if Keris will get it for him. Quin tells Helene that Keris must be doing something for the Paters that they would agree to let Grimarr wreak havoc in the poor parts of Navium.

A Sky Beyond The Storm[]

Quin is made Helene's Blood Shrike. He supports Elias' relationship with Laia and tells him to bring her to Serra.

Keris Veturia[]

Quin Veturius is Keris Veturia's father. Quin always chooses his grandson Elias over his daughter. After the Augurs brought Elias to Blackcliff, he was not very happy to learn his daughter had a child born out of wedlock, but somehow he made sure that people said nothing about it. Even though Keris accomplished many things upon graduating from Blackcliff, including bringing down the Lioness herself, none of it seemed to matter to him. When it was time to name an heir to Gens Veturia, Quin did not even consider choosing Keris. It is thought that part of the reason why he skipped over her, was that even he was horrified by her brutality and cruelty.
