–Cain to Elias Veturius - An Ember In The Ashes |
Elias Veturius is Blackcliff Academy's finest soldier, but secretly also its most unwilling. His attempts to run away from Blackcliff Academy is one of the biggest plot points in An Ember In The Ashes. He is the former Banu Al-Mauth, a trained Mask, and engaged to Laia.
Personality[]

He carries resentment and self-hatred for the actions Blackcliff Academy forced him to commit, and often blames himself for things that aren't his fault. Once given the opportunity, he strives to redeem himself by saving lives and freeing prisoners, proving his brave, loyal, and self-sacrificing nature. He values honesty and shows a great capacity for forgiveness, as he forgives Helene Aquilla for her betrayals. Elias only wants to be free from the tyranny he's being trained to enforce.
Physical Description[]
Elias is tall, at six feet four inches. He has black hair, pale gray eyes, high cheekbones, and golden brown skin.

Elias Veturius is the twenty-year-old son of the Commandant, Keris Veturia, and the grandson of the leader of Gens Veturia, Quin Veturius, who has appointed Elias as his heir.
Elias was given up at birth by his mother, who left him with Tribe Saif. He was discovered by Mamie Rila, who took him in as her foster child. She gives him the name Ilyass An Saif. He spent his childhood playing with the tribal children and growing up believing himself to be a tribal boy. At the age of six, he received a letter from Blackcliff Academy, marking him as a selected student. He was taken to Blackcliff against his will, where he learns his true parentage and where he spends the remainder of childhood.
Upon entering Blackcliff, Elias met Helene Aquilla in the "culling pen," where new students are picked on and tossed in the rain and mud. She told Elias, "I'll watch your back" with "all the gravitas of a Cadet." As Fivers, Helene and Elias stuck together to survive in the wilderness, solidifying their friendship. At one point during their time in the wilderness, a raiding party is said to have captured them, and Helene got her and Elias safely out due to the raiders underestimating her strength. Throughout their years at Blackcliff, Helene and Elias are targeted by Marcus Farrar. He is obsessed with having her, and Elias is the only one who can ward him off.
Elias is the best student at Blackcliff in two decades. He despises being a Mask, and is the only member of his class whose mask has not fused to his face yet. He has been planning his desertion for seven months.
An Ember In The Ashes[]
Inside a catacomb tunnel underneath Blackcliff, Elias is hiding a bag of food and water as part of his plan to desert upon graduating from Blackcliff Academy. Meanwhile, a Yearling deserter, Falconius Barrius, is trying to flee. Elias’ lieutenant Dex Atrius is leading the search for Falconius. Helene, Elias’ best friend, surprises Elias. She is suspicious of what Elias is doing in the catacombs but is distracted by frantic drumbeats indicating that Falconius has been caught. The two return to Blackcliff, with Elias wondering what Helene would feel and do if he successfully deserted.
The pair arrives at the courtyard to witness the punishment of Falconius, because it is a rule of Blackcliff. Students are forced to watch and cheer as Falconius is whipped by the Commandant. Elias is reluctant to cheer because he loathes violence, it’s the very reason he doesn’t want to be a Mask. After Falconius dies from his injuries, Elias decides to stay in the courtyard for a moment to mourn the boy, which is against the rules. The Commandant watches him, and he returns her stare. It is revealed that the Commandant is his mother who abandoned him when he was only a few hours old.
He is distraught for the rest of the day, thinking about the dead boy and worrying about his plan to desert. Despite the guilt, he manages to act how he is supposed to: smug, brutish, violent, and excited to be graduating. Elias arrives at dinner with Helene. The two join their friends, and everything is going fine until Elias mentions the boy. Marcus forces Elias to say that Falconius deserved his fate. Marcus then insults him, and Elias’ friends have to stop him before he gets in trouble for starting a fight.
Elias flees to the belltower courtyard where he is visited by an Augur named Cain. He learns that Cain and the Augurs can read minds and know Elias’ intention to desert. Instead of reporting him for punishment, Cain tells him to face his destiny instead of fleeing from it. Elias tries to get Cain to explain what he means, but the Augur disappears into thin air.
The next morning is graduation. Elias and his friends end up getting into a fight with Marcus and his cronies after Marcus kisses Helene without her permission. The Commandant interrupts the fight, and everyone goes to the school’s amphitheater for the graduation ceremony. After the students are declared graduates, the Augurs make an unexpected appearance. Cain declares the current dynasty will fail and it is time for the prophesized Warrior Emperor to be chosen through the Trials. Elias is chosen to be one of four Aspirants, along with Marcus, Helene, and Zak.
That night there is a party celebrating graduation at Quin Veturius’ house. Quin gifts Elias a pair of rare Teluman scims. Elias then meets with Helene and they both realizes they are each keeping secrets from each other for the first time.
After attending a briefing about the Trials at the Commandant’s office, Elias and the other Aspirants come across Laia outside the door. Marcus begins choking her. Helene convinces to ignore it to avoid anyone getting more hurt. Elias feels guilty for letting Marcus abuse her and believes he should have done something to stop it.
Later that night, Elias is asleep and begins having a nightmare. He wakes up in the scorching desert of the Great Wastes and realizes that the First Trial has begun. A note left by him says he has seven days to make it to the belltower at Blackcliff. The First Trial forces the Aspirants to face their fears. For Elias that means he has to face his fear of being a mindless killer and never-ending battles. He finds Helene and the two are attacked by Marcus and Zak. Elias manages to make it to the belltower, carrying a severely injured Helene, seconds before sunset. He accuses Marcus and Zak of cheating. Cain determines that they there is enough evidence to warrant them healing Helene, but not enough to declare sabotage. The next day, Elias comes across a badly injured Laia in the dunes by the Commandant’s house. He carries her back to the house so that Cook can tend to her. He promises to bring her a bloodroot serum which is more effective for her wound, and something denied slaves.
Before he can bring the bloodroot serum, the Second Trial unexpectedly starts. This Trial requires the Aspirants to battle various enemies until dawn. Elias and Helene work together as they face supernatural beings, which were considered myths. These include efrits, ghuls, and wraiths. Elias is wounded and Helene heals him by singing his “song” to him. Her power was awakened when she came into contact with sand efrits.
After recovering from the Second Trial Elias remembers the promise that he made to bring Laia the bloodroot serum but is distracted by Helene who is angry and jealous that Elias is thinking about a slave girl. She doesn’t understand why he care so much about her. After the fight with Helene, he heads towards the Commandant’s house to deliver the serum. He overhears Laia and Izzi discussing sneaking out of Blackcliff to attend the Moon Festival. Suddenly, Helene appears and says she is going to report the girls. He tries to convince her not to, but Helene will not change her mind. Reluctantly, Elias threatens to report Helene’s new ability to heal people. Helene storms off in anger. Elias then follows Laia and Izzi into Serra and attends the Moon Festival disguised as a Tribesman. He watches Laia and Izzi have a good time and cannot bring himself to ruin it for them. He watches Keenan approach Laia and feels jealous at the way she looks at him.
Elias is then dragged to the dance floor by a surprisingly coquettish Tribeswoman who introduces herself as Afya Ara-Nur. They dance and then Afya gives him a coin as a favor token. This surprises Elias because favor tokens are rare, and even more rare from a Tribeswoman. As she leaves, Afya tells Elias to dance with Laia. Elias takes her advice and asks Laia to dance. They have a good time and are attracted to one another. Suddenly, Elias senses a Martial raid coming before anybody else does and shouts a warning to the crowd. He leads Laia and Izzi to an alley where he reveals himself to Laia’s horror. Elias escorts the girls back to the Commandant’s house. Izzi goes inside, but Elias asks Laia to wait a moment so he can give her the bloodroot serum. Suddenly he senses his mother coming and tells Laia to do what he says. He begins acting as if he is trying to have sex with her and whispers to Laia to fight him off. They both know that students rape slaves all the time and neither will be punished for it.
He spends the next few days receiving Helene's silent treatment. On one particular day, Elias is challenged by Helene to a duel. He takes this opportunity to make it up to her. However, as he is about to kiss her, he hears a scream and therefore gets up quickly to find out where it comes from, leaving whatever it is between Helene and him. He and Helene find out that the scream came from Laia who is being attacked by Marcus and Zak. Elias pins Marcus down and tells Izzi to run and at the same time, he is throwing punches at Marcus. Zak walks off too, then Elias lets Marcus go, seeing Laia hurt he picks her up and goes to the Commandant's house. He takes her to her room and asks Helene if she could heal Laia, she says no because she doesn't know how she healed Elias in the Second Trial.
The next day in the mess hall Elias avoids Helene even when she says she stopped by the Commandant's house and visited Laia. Elias then goes to the house to see Laia for himself but Cook tells him to go, the rest of the day he fails in combat and also avoids Helene. After training Helene walks up to him and tells him that Faris saw him walking to the Commandant's house in the morning. She also tells Elias that he shouldn't be worrying about some Scholar slave and should be worrying about the Trails. Elias then tells her that she was in love with him and that he doesn't love her back because she's just like every other Mask. Helene then reveals to Elias that she actually healed Laia last night and that loving him has been the worst thing that has happened to her. She also reveals that she made a plan with the Augurs to keep him safe, but she doesn't tell him the deal yet.
On the day of the Third Trial Elias waits for Cain and when he does arrive, he is taken into the amphitheater and is assigned into the Red Platoon with Dex, Faris, and twenty-seven other men. Cain then tells Elias and his platoon that they will engage in a battle to the death and for the Trial to end Elias will have to defeat or be defeated by the leader of the enemy. He warns them that if they show mercy "there will be consequences." Cain then opens the door and Elias and the platoon immediately notice that it is raining and thundering, the Augurs' own doing. Elias then tells his men to "not engage" which he means not to kill but to only injure only because he doesn't want any of his friends to die. He then notices that his enemy is the Blue Platoon which is led by Helene. During the battle Tristas charges after Elias but he's able to knock him down. A few seconds later Elias notices the Faris is acting very strange is also noticed by Fortis. Tristas manages to get up and attacks Elias again. Time passes and Tristas suddenly attacks Elias again but this time he only goes up to him and says, "I'm so sorry Elias" and dies, killed by Dex. Dex tells Elias that he has to give them the order to kill, and Elias agrees and orders his platoon to kill. Elias then goes on his own and murders everyone on sight including Ennis, Leander, and Demetrius who accepts his fate peacefully and doesn't fight back. Helene then finds Elias and calls his name, the two then begin dueling and Elias eventually wins and plunges his scim into her chest to kill her. But the sword breaks surprising Elias. Cain then appears and disqualifies Helene for having on battle armor, which is against the rules, and marking Elias as the winner of the Third Trial. Other Augurs then appear around Elias telling him that the armor just attached on to her.
Traumatized by the events of the Third Trial, Elias is frustrated with the Augurs and wonders what their motivations are. As the winner of the Third Trial, Elias is given Laia as a “prize” by the Augurs and they are locked in his room until sunrise. Of course, Elias is a gentleman, and they get to know each other and go no further than a kiss. Elias casually mentions to Laia that he dug a secret exit from the school under his room and Laia realizes this is the information she can give the Resistance to get her brother out of prison.
The next day the Fourth Trial begins. The three remaining Aspirants, Elias, Helena, and Marcus must kill Laia and the first to do so will be named the Emperor. When they begin Helene knocks Marcus out hoping that Elias will finish Laia off, making Elias Emperor and her Blood Shrike. Only Elias refuses to kill Laia and is instead protecting her. While Elias and Helene begin arguing, Marcus wakes up and throws a knife at Laia striking her and the Augur holding her in place. It appears that Laia is dead. Marcus is named Emperor and Elias is sentenced to death and will be beheaded the following morning. Laia helps Elias escape with the help of Cook who knows a lot about making bombs. Laia and Elias make their way out of the school. Helene finds them, but Elias convinces them to let them go. She does but tells him that the next time they see each other they will be enemies. Laia and Elias flee through the catacombs with the intention of going to free Laia’s brother from Kauf Prison.
A Torch Against The Night[]
Elias and Laia are fleeing from Blackcliff through the catacombs. While there they encounter a young girl, who demands silver. They realize it’s not a girl but a cave efrit. The creature accuses Elias of being the reaper of death and wonders what Laia is. The creature says that “he” wants the silver and that “he” will get it. They kill the efrit and continue fleeing, only to run into the Commandant. Elias fights her but an explosion collapses the tunnel. Thankfully Elias and Laia are able to emerge from the collapsed tunnel. When they enter Serra, they discover the Resistance has begun a revolt in the city. The pair flee to a Veturius warehouse that has an unknown exit out of Serra. Unfortunately, the Commandant is waiting for them. Elias and the Commandant fight and she nicks Elias with a blade. Laia is able to sneak up on the Commandant and knock her unconscious. They escape Serra, but Laia feels it was a mistake to leave the Commandant alive.
As they travel through the desert, they realized the Commandant essentially let them go. Elias and Laia are attacked by wraiths in the desert outside the city. The wraiths demand silver. They escape but soon realize that Elias was poisoned by the Commandant with Nightweed. It’s a poison with no cure or antidote leaving him with only six months to live and severe seizures until he dies. While escaping, Laia tells Elias about her captive brother in Kauf who can make weapons for the rebels. Seizures grip Elias and in unconsciousness, he goes to the Waiting Place, where the Soul Catcher resides, and the dead stay when they are not ready to move on.
Upon returning from the Waiting Place, Elias is distant with Laia, having been told by the Soul Catcher to stay away from her so as not to hurt her when he dies. However, they are drawn to each other and share a kiss. Keenan and Izzi successfully track them down. After reuniting, they tell Elias and Laia about the Commandant’s extermination of the Scholars in retaliation for the Resistance’s revolt. That night the Soul Catcher reopens a wound on Elias’ arm to prove that she can hurt him if he continues to get too close to Laia. The group travels to Nur. In the city of Nur, Elias overhears Helene instruct her men to tail Mamie Rila, his foster mother. Elias takes the group to Afya Ara-Nur, a tribeswoman owing him a favor and demands she help them out of Nur, take them to Kauf, and aid them in saving Darin. Elias meets with his mother and tells her about Blackcliff and the things they forced him to do there. She goes to the storyteller's stage and tells his story to incite a riot so that the group's caravans can leave without Martial inspection. In the confusion, Helene spots Elias but only makes a half-hearted attempt to arrest him.
Elias visits the Soul Catcher again, who tells him he has two months to live. Returning to his body, Elias decides to split off from the group because traveling alone will get him to Kauf Prison faster, allowing him to break Darin out weeks earlier. He goes to Afya Ara-Nur before leaving, and gives her a map of a cave a day's walk from Kauf where they will meet. Near the Forest of Dusk, the Soul Catcher appears and tells Elias that the Forest is the Waiting Place in the physical realm and to enter. The Soul Catcher explains she was once a jinn girl, now tied to the place, paying for her crimes by escorting ghosts from one realm to the next, betraying the jinn to the humans and that her name is Shaeva. With two weeks left to live, she takes him to Kauf. Elias sneaks into Kauf pretending to be a guard, and the sights and sounds bring him back to the horror if performing guard duty there as a Fiver, where his natural empathy caused him to suffer along with the tortured prisoners. Elias casually asks a guard about Darin and is told that Darin died in the interrogation cells weeks ago. The Warden finds Elias and recognizes him on sight, saying that he has been waiting for him, much to Elias' horror. The Warden holds a knife to a Scholar child's throat in order to prevent Elias from fighting his way out. They Warden gleefully says he has not experimented on a Mask in a long time and houses Elias in the interrogation block. Shortly after, the Warden tortures Elias and mangles one of his hands; his also beaten multiple times. The Scholar slave Elias saved earlier comes into his cell and cleans his wounds. Elias names him Tas. When a guard kicks Tas, Elias pummels the guard. The Warden punishes Elias by torturing Tas in the next room so that Elias can hear Tas' screams.
Later, Tas tells him that the man they are currently hearing scream is called the Artist, and he cries out the name "Laia" in his sleep. Elias realizes that the Artist must be Darin. Therefore, Darin must be alive. Tas also tells Elias that the Scholars in the pits have a rebel movement. Elias manages to escape his cell and finds Darin. Darin says the Warden has not asked a single question about the Teluman weapons, he only asks about Laia. Darin tells Elias what he told the Martials about Laia, and Elias recognizes those exact words coming from Keenan's mouth. Elias realizes Keenan is a traitor and he is the one who told the Warden that Elias was coming to Kauf. Elias and Darin try to walk out, but the Warden ambushes them. The Warden questions Elias about Laia, but Elias does not know why the Warden is asking. Elias returns to the Waiting Place, where he sees Izzi. Izzi tells him what happened and he helps her cross over into the afterlife. Elias asks Shaeva why the Nightbringer and the Martials are interested in Laia. Shaeva tells Elias about Keenan being the Nightbringer and about the Star, whose pieces have to be given willingly out of love and trust. The Nightbringer wants to free the jinn living in Shaeva's grove, but she thinks he shouldn't because their imprisonment has driven them mad. The Nightbringer cannot kill Laia because all who have been given the Star are protected from him by its power, which includes Elias, because Laia let him hold the armlet once. The Warden and Keris don't know about the armlet or why the Nightbringer is interested in Laia. The Nightbringer wants to use the jinn to kill the Scholars first, then all of humanity.
When Elias returns from the Waiting Place, he begins formulating a plan to get him, Darin, and Tas out. Through Tas and another slave child named Bee, Elias and Laia are able to create their plan.
On the day Shaeva said Elias would die, a weakened Elias frees himself and Darin with the help of Tas. An altercation with a guard leaves Darin unconscious. The Scholar rebels start a fire in the prison. Elias carries Darin through the burning prison but is unable to open the locked door to the main part of the prison. Elias dies. In the Waiting Place, Elias begs Shaeva to send him back. Shaeva says Elias caught her attention because the spirits he killed were not angry with him, and because he grieved for them. She says that when he first came to the grove, he was a natural with the spirits. She wanted Elias to take her place as the Soul Catcher, but now advises him to accept death. Elias asks her to bring him back to life, and he will be Shaeva's successor and allow her to train him to replace her. Shaeva accepts. Elias wakes, still hurting from the torture, but strong without poison in his blood. The door is open, and Elias carries Darin outside with Tas. Laia, Elias, Afya, and Tas fight the guards and free the Scholar prisoners. Tas kills the Warden. They all escape, with the unconscious Darin, in boats.
Near the Waiting Place, Laia and Darin live in a cabin so that Laia can be near Elias who has to be close to the Forest. Tas and the Scholars make for the free lands. Afya also says goodbye and returns to her tribe. Elias and Laia kiss and lie entwined in the cabin. Darin wakes up.
A Reaper At The Gates[]
Elias has spent the last few months learning how to be the Soul Catcher from Shaeva. They have also debated Martial military history, bickered about chores, and shared notes on hunting and combat. She is frustrated with him for shirking his responsibilities to help Laia. Shaeva uses her magic to trap Elias in the grove of jinn to make him practice soothing a spirit. Elias wants to do it later because he is supposed to be meeting Laia to help rescue Mamie Rila. Shaeva repeatedly tells Elias he must let go of the human world because until he does, he will not be able to access the magic of the Waiting Place.
In order to use Mauth and the magic of the Waiting Place, Elias must stop having emotions. To help him lose his humanity, he calls on his training as a Mask because they are forced to stifle and suppress their emotions. When he is able to access the magic, he can finally see the ghuls.
Elias visits the Tribes, and specifically with Aubarit, to see if they are having trouble with passing on the ghosts. Elias sees that ghuls have congregated near the tents where Aubarit and the other Fakirs have put those who are afflicted by the spirits unable to pass on. He tells Aubarit and Mamie Rila that they need salt. He explains that those afflicted are surrounded by ghuls, who hold onto their spirits. They are to put salt around those who should be dead because the ghuls hate it. Once the ghuls are gone, the Fakirs should be able to commune with the spirits again.[1] The moment his emotions return, Mauth's magic leaves him. Afya Ara-Nur tells Elias that the Martials have amassed nearly five thousand soldiers to take out the Tribes. In order to stop, or at least slow, the Martial's army, Elias kills the commander and the four other Masks in his tent planning the coming battle. Always unwilling to kill and not wanting to be a Mask, Elias knows his wishes do not matter. He reluctantly "unleashes the Mask lurking within."[2]
The jinn show Elias his memories, even ones he didn't know he had. One of those memories is of a four-year-old Elias coming across the Commandant in the Tribal desert. She asks him his name and then tells him to go back to the caravan because dark creatures walk the desert at night. The jinn then show Elias the present where Keris is in Navium. She is still wearing Helene's shirt of living metal, Helene's prize from the Second Trial. She kills a slave boy who found a sculpture of a mother holding a child. Then he is back in the Forest. He pushes the jinn out of his mind and pushes into their consciousness. They are surprised he is able to do so, and it allows him to glimpse their feelings: rage, shock, a shared deep pain, a swiftly suppressed panic, and a furtiveness. The jinn instigate an attack by the ghosts of the Waiting Place on some nearby humans in retaliation.
The jinn show Elias their memories of Sher Jinnaat and what their lives were like before they were imprisoned. They show him how they were imprisoned by the Star. Elias is heartbroken at the pain they experienced.
A Sky Beyond The Storm[]
Elias is haunted by images of Helene, Laia, and Keris. However, because he has joined with Mauth, who has taken his memories, he does not know who they are or why he sees their faces. While Mauth has made most of Elias' memory fade, he has left some memories. One is what happened when first became Soul Catcher and what happened because he did not give up his humanity and emotions. Elias has spent the last few months passing on the ghosts of the Waiting Place and building a cabin for himself to replace Shaeva's that the efrits burned down. He has also turned the now-empty jinn grove into his personal training space. When his thoughts grow unruly and he feels emotions rising, he exercises. He remembers being told that, "when your mind does not hear year, train your body. Your mind will follow."[3]
Arius Harper’s spirit tells Elias that when the Sea of Suffering broke through the barrier, it took him, but before it could consume him, Mauth snatched him away. Elias is now in between the world of the living and the dead. Elias could choose to fall into the Sea of Suffering and lose himself in his pain. Or he could return to the world, for he is the Soul Catcher and has a duty, the balance must be restored.
Elias proposes to Laia, who accepts. They plan on moving back to Serra, where Elias will become a teacher.
Powers[]
Elias has the power to windwalk. This allows him to travel great distances in moments. When he becomes the Soul Catcher, he is granted various abilities and powers from Mauth. Mauth's power shields Elias from threats and gives him insight into the emotions of the living and the dead. The magic lets him extend life or end it. Mauth also takes away and dulls Elias' emotions. Mauth and Elias communicate telepathically. The land of the Forest of Dusk also changes to meet Elias' needs. Mauth put an awareness of the Waiting Place in his mind that tis much like a map. It allows him to sense when someone or something his in the Forest. Elias' body is the only part of him that is still human.
Relationships[]
Helene Aquilla[]
Elias is Helene's first love and "the worst thing that ever happened to her." They are mutual best friends.
Laia[]
Elias and Laia initially bond over their lack of parents. Laia likes who she is with Elias. He makes her feel braver, stronger, and unafraid. She describes the version of her that is with Elias as burning the brightest. Over time, Elias and Laia begin to love one another and initiate a relationship, which is forced to end once Elias becomes the Banu al Mauth and cannot feel anything for Laia. Despite this, Laia tries to get Elias to feel for her once again, which works. At the end of the series, Elias and Laia are engaged.
Shaeva[]
Elias views Shaeva as a wiser and older sister. She is his teacher and mentor after he becomes Soul Catcher. He notices how he never cared about his teachers at Blackcliff, but he genuinely doesn't want to disappoint Shaeva. Elias is protective of Shaeva. He hates how the jinn torment and mock her. In their time together Shaeva has come to care about Elias. Elias mourns Shaeva and is hearbroken when she dies.
